# Text

A free-text answer. The most common type, and the one to reach for whenever the answer will not fall neatly into a list.

## Text options

**Multi-line** — lets the answer span several lines. Worth turning on whenever you are asking someone to describe something rather than name it.

**Min length** and **Max length** — `0` means no minimum and no limit. A minimum is a blunt tool: it stops "n/a" and little else, and it will frustrate a caller who genuinely has nothing to add. A maximum is more useful, particularly when the answer is carried into a system with a field limit of its own.

## On a voice call

A text question becomes an open question the caller answers by speaking, and what they say is captured as the answer. Long, detailed prompts that read well on screen often do not work aloud — rehearse them in Test Voice before publishing.
