# Category selection

Offers the caller the list of categories — the top-level choice most conversations open with.

Which categories appear, and in what order, comes from the script set the conversation is running in rather than from this step. See [Categories and topics](/scripts/categories-and-topics.md).

On the conversational channels the caller does not have to choose from the list at all — they can describe the problem, and Keyfax will match what they said to a category where it can. The list is the fallback, not the only route.
